Pilates was created in Germany in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates.
As a child he suffered from rickets, asthma and rheumatic fever, but determined to overcome his fragility, he experimented with many fitness regimes and chose aspects of each to develop his own body. By selecting the most effective features, he was able to work out a system with the perfect balance of strength and flexibility. He then began to teach these techniques to others.
In 1926, he emigrated to the USA where he and his wife Clara set up a studio in New York. Clients ranged from boxers to top ballet dancers, actors, gymnasts and athletes who all wanted to learn his method.
Since his death in 1967 aged 83, his legacy and method of teaching has spread across the world and it is now one of the most popular fitness regimes.
